Massage lowers cortisol, increases white blood cells, raises oxytocin and dopamine levels.
Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center found very positive results when their participants received deep tissue massage for only 45 minutes. After taking blood samples before and after the participants’ massages, researchers found significant metabolic changes after only one massage and within one hour. The results were a marked decrease in the stress hormone cortisol and showed a dramatic increase in the number of white blood cells that support the body’s immunity. There was also a significant rise in the brain chemicals oxytocin and dopamine. Both hormones are associated with contentment.
Massage reduces inflammation and increases muscle recovery more than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
The New York Times recently reported on a new study of the potential pain relieving effects of massage therapy on muscular-skeletal tissue. Each
participant exercised to the point of exhaustion to create exercise-induced muscle damage. Immediately following the exercise, participants received massage for 10 minutes. Findings indicated massage therapy reduced inflammation by 65% through production of inflammatory cytokines, and promoted enhanced recovery through mitochondrial biogenesis.
The effects of massage are similar to that of conventional drugs, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) without all the side effects.
Massage and weight loss: You burn an average of 100 calories by receiving a one hour deep tissue massage! At Johns Hopkins, researchers found that the subcutaneous fat capsule can be broken down and absorbed as waste. Massage significantly lowers cortisol which affects belly fat. Drink water after your massage for a more effective treatment.
